Professor Lord

Reginald V Lord is a Sydney upper gastrointestinal and general surgeon.

Professor Lord received his undergraduate degree (M.B.B.S.) from the University of Sydney, a postgraduate research degree (M.D.) from the University of New South Wales, and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (F.R.A.C.S.).

He trained in general surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney. Following this he spent more than five years at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles where he was a part of the renowned Foregut Surgery Department, which was at that time considered the world’s leading oesophageal surgery unit. During his time at the University of Southern California he was a member of the team that first performed the gastric sleeve operation for weight loss and he is one of the first surgeons worldwide to have performed this operation, more than 15 years ago.

Professor Lord is Head of Surgery at Notre Dame School of Medicine, Head of the Gastroesophageal Cancer Program at the St. Vincent’s Centre for Applied Medical Research, and adjunct Professor of Surgery at Macquarie University School of Medicine. He is a past Chair of the Sydney Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery Society and a past member of the Cancer Council NSW (CCNSW) cancer research committee and the CCNSW Strategic Research Partnership grant review committee, has served on NHMRC review panels, and regularly reviews grants for other countries.

He is a member of the Cancer Council Australia Guidelines Committee for Barrett’s oesophagus and neoplasia and was a member of the Advisory Panel to the Medical Services Advisory Committee investigating radiofrequency ablation for Barrett’s oesophagus. 

Professor Lord was the first to use endoscopic radiofrequency ablation (RFA) therapy for Barrett’s oesophagus in this country and was a pioneer of BRAVO wireless probe testing for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). He was also the first person to perform robotic general surgery in Australia.
